Spain Family Reunification Visa (FSC) Guide

Family reunification (reagrupación familiar) allows non-EU family members to join a legal resident or Spanish citizen who can demonstrate stable status and sufficient means to support dependants.

• Spouses and registered civil partners of legal residents or Spanish citizens
• Minor children and dependent parents in qualifying circumstances
• Other dependants where relationship and dependency can be legally proven
• Not for joining a partner who only holds tourist status in Spain

Both the applicant and sponsor must meet requirements. The sponsor in Spain drives much of the documentation.

• Sponsor must hold stable legal residency or Spanish citizenship with valid NIE
• Proof of relationship: marriage or birth certificate (apostilled and sworn-translated)
• Sponsor income: must meet minimum thresholds to support dependants (varies by family size — verify current IPREM multiples)
• Adequate housing: proof of suitable accommodation in Spain (rental contract, property deed, or empadronamiento certificate)
• Sponsor must typically be empadronado at their Spanish address
• Clean criminal record for the applicant
• Private health insurance may be required during the application period

Relationship documents are scrutinised — incomplete apostilles or translations are a top rejection reason.

• Foreign documents usually require an apostille (or equivalent legalization) and a sworn translation into Spanish (traducción jurada).
• Most consulates expect documents issued within the last 3 months unless otherwise stated.
• Passport must typically be valid for at least 12 months with at least two blank pages.
• Valid passport and visa application form
• Marriage or birth certificate with apostille and sworn translation
• Sponsor's NIE, residency certificate (certificado de registro), and passport copy
• Sponsor income proof: employment contract, tax returns, or bank statements
• Housing proof: rental agreement, property title, or habitation certificate
• Empadronamiento certificate for the sponsor
• Criminal record certificate for the applicant
• Recent marriage certificate (some consulates require issuance within 6–12 months)

The sponsor in Spain often initiates or supports the authorization before the family member applies at the consulate.

• Sponsor gathers residency proof, income documentation, and housing evidence in Spain
• Applicant obtains apostilled relationship documents from their home country
• Family authorization may be processed at Extranjería in Spain before consular visa application
• Applicant books cita previa at Spanish consulate in country of residence
• After visa approval: travel to Spain and complete empadronamiento and TIE for each family member
• Each family member needs their own application — dependants are not automatically bundled

Family members may access healthcare through the sponsor's Seguridad Social affiliation once registered.

• Empadronamiento: register your address at the local ayuntamiento within the first weeks.
• TIE card: book a cita previa for fingerprinting within 30 days of arrival or approval; submit EX-17 and pay form 790-012.
• Tax registration: file Form 030 with AEAT to register your fiscal address in Spain.
• Healthcare: register via sponsor's Seguridad Social or regional health authority after residency is granted
• Work permission: rules vary — some family reunification authorisations include work rights; confirm on your tarjeta
