Spain Freelancer Visa (Cuenta Propia) Guide

Cuenta propia (self-employed account) authorization is for foreign nationals who will work independently in Spain — as autónomos serving Spanish or international clients from a Spanish base.

You must demonstrate that your self-employed activity is viable and that you can support yourself through it.

• Business plan or project description showing economic viability (less formal than entrepreneur visa but still required)
• Proof of qualifications or professional experience for regulated or skilled activities
• Financial means to launch and sustain the activity — thresholds vary by consulate
• Professional licences or homologación if your profession is regulated in Spain
• Clean criminal record and comprehensive private health insurance for the application period
• Commitment to register as autónomo and pay Social Security contributions upon starting activity

A gestoría can help format your business plan and application to consulate expectations.

• Foreign documents usually require an apostille (or equivalent legalization) and a sworn translation into Spanish (traducción jurada).
• Most consulates expect documents issued within the last 3 months unless otherwise stated.
• Passport must typically be valid for at least 12 months with at least two blank pages.
